Picture Book Magic
A 32-page book designed to be read a thousand times
An author-illustrator project requiring full interior art for a 32-page picture book — whimsical, emotionally resonant, and designed to be read aloud hundreds of times. Every spread needed to hold a child's attention while rewarding an adult reader's eye.
The Approach
Starting with character studies and thumbnail spreads, the artist developed a visual rhythm that mirrors the text's pacing. Every double-page spread was composed to guide young eyes through the story naturally, with hidden details that reward repeat readings. The color palette shifts subtly across the arc of the story — cool and quiet at the start, building to warm, saturated climax spreads.
The Result
The book received starred reviews from Kirkus and Publishers Weekly, was selected for multiple "best of" lists, and has been continuously in print since release. It was translated into 14 languages within the first year.
