The Witch Queen
Dark fantasy brought to life through masterful illustration
The Brief
A publisher sought a visually arresting cover and interior illustrations for a dark fantasy novel centered on a powerful sorceress navigating a world of treachery and ancient magic. The art needed to capture a sense of foreboding elegance — regal yet dangerous — and set the tone for the entire series.

The Approach
Our artist immersed himself in the manuscript, developing a rich visual vocabulary rooted in dramatic lighting, layered textures, and a muted palette punctuated by bursts of supernatural color. Character studies explored the Witch Queen's duality — commanding authority and hidden vulnerability — before final paintings brought key moments to life with cinematic scale and emotional depth.
The Result
The cover became an instant standout in the fantasy genre, drawing comparisons to fine art and generating significant pre-release buzz on social media. Readers and booksellers praised the artwork for elevating the story before a single page was turned.
“David's artwork didn't just illustrate the story — it became inseparable from it.”
