John Bendall-Brunello is a best-selling children's book illustrator with over 30 years experience having worked with the top publishers in both the UK and the USA with co-editions in nearly every country in the world. He has illustrated books written by some of the most prestigious authors of children's books today including Dick King Smith, Martin Waddell, Sally Grindley and Malachy Doyle, amongst many others.
John drew from quite a young age - doodling cartoon likenesses of his teachers in notebooks at school, before eventually putting his talents to good use at the local college of art, studying illustration and design. Since leaving college in 1981, John concentrated on improving his illustration skills by working for educational publishers such as Oxford and Cambridge University Press followed by his first full color children’s book for Orchard Books in 1985. Since then he has had over 80 children's books published in England and the US (with co-editions in many European countries).
John has a great love of drawing - in particular animals and children, capturing movement and life within simple and bold compositions. Aside from illustration, John has numerous other interests, including traveling to far-flung places such as Kerala in Southern India (gently floating down the backwaters in a rice boat!) and the Maldives (snorkeling with baby sharks and turtles!) He lives part of the year in Cambridge and part in Cannes in the South of France with his Italian wife who is also a successful author in the UK (published titles: My Favourite Foods Gullane Children's Books, 2011 and 4 books in a series for QED Publishing entitled: I Wish I Could....Read, Sleep, Dance and Roar).
Sales of individual books such as the ever popular My Goose Betsy (Walker Books) and I Love You This Much (Zonderkidz) have sold over 120,000 copies each, whilst work in series such as 100 Days of Cool (MathStart series - Harper Collins, USA) has reached over 1.5 million readers.
John completed a number of projects in 2012/13 including: Peep Leap! written by Elizabeth Verdick (published by Amazon Children's Books-USA), Otter Out Of The Water written by Kathy-jo Wargin (published by Sleeping Bear Press, USA) and Lucky, the Gecko written by Avi Abraham (part 1 of a 3 book series) (published by Kommode Verlag, Switzerland)
He will be working on several new titles to be published in 2014: one written by his wife Tiziana Bendall-Brunello entitled Hogs Hate Hugs! (Lion Hudson, UK) and two books for Norwegian publisher Sandviks forming part of their spin-off series from the highly acclaimed book The Pencil (Walker Books, 2009) originally written by Bruce Ingman and illustrated by Allan Ahlberg.
He will also begin work on the 2nd title in the Lucky series of books to be published by Kommode Verlag in early 2014.
